This game can be played defensively, ignoring other players and farming gems until you are strong enough to defend yourself, or actively attacking people as they walk around or go farming; in most people's opinion, this is more interesting. In my personal experience with the game, it seems like the larger ships often have teammates joining them out of fear of being killed or just because they know them, so you should try to make friends in-game or take one with you!
